Bed frames are designed to hold up a mattress and box springs and give additional support to the overall construction of the bed. There are as many different bed frame materials as there are styles and designs of beds. There are bed frames which have built-in storage systems like drawers, bookcases, including built-in under-the-bed storage systems.
Not only made constructed from solid hardwoods these days, bed frames are constructed from all types of material including veneer woods and wood composites. Steel and iron bed frames have also been useful in the construction of bed frames. Tubular bed frames are usually powered coated and lighter in weight than steel or hardwood bed frames.
The construction of a bed frame begins with a solid assembly of the bed rails bolted into the truss system of the frame. A center support is most commonly used that is installed down the middle of the bed frame and used for extra support of a bed spring and mattress. Bed frames can have a solid construction of the center support and bed slats when constructed in metal tubing, as with the construction of a futon design.
Bed frames can support the box spring and mattress, with a system of slates placed inside the lip or shelf of the bed frame, and span the underside of the box spring and mattress for support. These slats can be of hardwoods or metal.
Consumers look for function and affordability these days when it comes to bedroom furniture. There are many bed frames that have built-in drawers and storage system. These are helpful additions to a bed frame in that it allows for extra storage space for clothes, shoes, books, blankets and extra bedding. Built-in drawer systems can also be used for the storage of off-season clothes.
Bed frames with bookcases are typically called a Captain’s Bed. This bed frame allows the storage of books, lights and other items within arm’s reach at the headboard of the bed. Some bed frames in he Captain’s Bed style are installed with mirrors in the headboard. Sliding panels follow grooves in the shelf of the headboard and allow for hidden storage.
Bed frames constructed of tubing like steel and aluminum allow for a more modern style of bed. Not as heavy as iron bed frames, steel composites and aluminum hollow tubing can be constructed into shapes like modern bunk beds and curving canopy beds.
Solid wood bed frames are of the highest quality. Hardwoods are a favorite with consumers who treasure the traditional look of bedroom furniture. Solidly constructed and passed down from one generation to another, hardwoods have withstood the test of time and many antique beds have survived to become these treasured heirlooms.
Veneer bed frames are cheaper to manufacture than hardwoods and do not typically last as long. Veneer bed frames are typically bought for the first youth bed for a toddler and child and can mimic the look of wicker and a variety of woods. These beds are light and easy to assemble and are durable enough to hold any size mattress and box springs.
